Local Area
The Colne Valley is a fantastic area to explore on foot or by bike with its undulating countryside, historic villages and the winding River Colne making it a pleasure to explore.
Walking
Walking on the Pennine Way National Trail is a must whether you are a serious walker or just a casual walker.
Some people like to walk the full length between Edale and Kirk Yetholm. Others like to spend a week, a few days or even a day at a time taking in spectacular lengths of the route. Most full length walkers allow between 16 to 19 days to walk the Way.
The full length of the Pennine Way is 268 miles, but chances are, that if you walk from one end to the other you will walk nearer to 253 miles. The longer length includes both sides of the Bowes Loop, both route options into Kirk Yetholm, the alternative route at High Cup Nick and the de-tour to the summit of The Cheviot.
The barn is next to the Kirklees Way, a 72 mile/116 kilometres long circular walking route around Kirklees, including the Upper Colne Valley. The Kirklees Way mixes the exposed moorland tops with the industrial towns in the valleys crossing Spen Valley to Oakwell Hall, Dewsbury, Clayton West and the Holme Valley to the village of Marsden.
The availability of comfortable and affordable accommodation at Belle Vue Barn will definitely enhance the experience of walking the Kirklees Way, or indeed any other walking routes in the area.
There is a whole host of walks you can search for and download on the Kirklees Local Walks web site and what a great place Belle Vue Barn will be to come back to and relax.
Cycling
Explore Calderdale’s peaks and dales! We can recommend an e-bike hire not far from us. ‘Juicedupbikes’ offer a great personal service perfect for the hilly Yorkshire landscape. They offer state of the art e-bikes at a very reasonable daily/weekly hire rate.
Cyclists and mountain bikers are spoiled for choice too: two national cycle routes come our way, whilst there’s ample opportunity for off-road adventure on the Pennine moorland bridleways. Cyclists and Mountain Bikers can take advantage of specific rides and shouldn’t miss the routes on offer.
Belle Vue Barn is nearby to the Pennine X Mountain Bike Challenge and is only a 5 to 10 minute bike ride from the Colne Valley Mountain Bike Challenge; both of these are annual events.
You will be able to relax after a race or bike ride. Clean up your bikes and store them securely before enjoying a drink and meal at the nearby pub which is within walking distance.
